AT&T to start its 3G Upgrade later this year Posted: 29 May 2009 09:05 AM PDT AT&T to start its 3G Upgrade later this year: Recently AT&T announces that it will stat to upgrade its 3G network to 7.2Mbps HSPA , which double the current 3.6Mbps speed. AT&T said that network upgrades are planed to begin later this month, although they will be completed only in 2011. In addition, AT&T is going to double the amount of 850MHz spectrum dedicated to its 3G network in “most metropolitan areas,” which should improve network capacity and building penetration. Moreover, thousands of cell site backhaul connections will be added, in order to support the upcoming HSPA and LTE broadband speeds. Finally, AT&T said that qualifying smartphone and 3G LaptopConnect plans will have access to its 20,000 Wi-Fi hot spots around the U.S., and will be able to switch from 3G to Wi-Fi seamlessly.
